The 2018 NLCB Chutney Soca Monarch has been cancelled due to lack of Government support.
This was announced by Southex chief executive officer, George Singh, in a press conference on Thursday.
The decision to cancel the 23-year-old event came one day before Southex was expected to launch the 2018 Chutney Soca Monarch at Queens Park Oval, Port-of-Spain.
Speaking at a press conference at Southex office in San Fernando Singh said he was called to an urgent meeting at the NLCB headoffice on Wednesday.
He was informed that the NLCB was unable to sponsor the event. The NLCB was the main sponsor of the event for 15 years.
Singh said he was then informed through an email that the Chutney Soca Monarch would no longer be a recipient of any funding by the Ministry of Finance.
He said, “The Government over the last three years has consistently reduced funding to Chutney Soca Monarch and various members of the present administration have stated directly to me that chutney soca brings no value to carnival.”
It seems nobody’s mother is off-limits this year.
